THE PEDERSEN

Mikael Pedersen (1855 - 1929) from Denmark patented his revolutionary bicycle in 1893. Before that, he'd made his name as an inventor of ingenious agricultural machinery.

Mikael was a cyclist, and wasn't satisfied with the comfort of a conventional saddle (and indeed, little has altered in the design of such saddles to the present day). He was driven to invent the Pedersen hammock saddle. As an engineer, he understood something of structures, and using the saddle as a starting point, he constructed a frame which derived its enormous strength from the fact that it consisted purely of triangles. The elements in the frame have to withstand only tension and compression, never bending.

Pedersen bicycles were manufactured in the English village of Dursley in Gloucestershire. The frames were very labour-intensive to build - 14 thin tubes had to be hand-brazed in 57 places, forming 21 triangles - and this meant that only the privileged few ever owned a Pedersen. Not everyone could or would pay the extra for this very special bike, but those that did never regretted their decision. On no other bicycle can one glide along with such comfort and posture.

Jesper Solling   Around 20 years ago the Danish framebuilder Jesper Solling fell in love with the Pedersen design, and began to build frames. For the first 15 years production was based in the Copenhagen 'free town' of Christiania. Expansion has recently forced a move to Ebeltoft, also in Denmark, from where Pedersen frames are dispatched around the world.

Complete bikes are also offered, available by order through specialist dealers. This brochure shows a few examples of how your dream bicycle might look.

You'll notice that the size ranges have some overlap. It's certainly possible that a rider will fit two different Pedersen frame sizes! a medium frame with the saddlestays fully extended is the same as a large frame adjusted right down. The difference is, of course, in the angle of the saddle support strap. If you're not sure about which size would suit you best, we advise you to seek out a specialist dealer to help you decide correctly.   Schmidt's Original Hub Dynamo

Pedersen riders are individualists, and often like to assemble their machines themselves. We offer our frames powder-coated in five colours: black, dark green, dark metallic grey, bordeaux and blue. Mountings for cantilever braked can be fitted, or not, as desired. Each Pedersen is built to your precise specification.

We use high-quality, European components almost exclusively on our bicycles. Derailleur gearing uses Sachs Neos and Quarz (8-speed) components, or the combined hub/derailleur 3 X 7 system from Sachs (21 speeds). Hub geared machines use the Sachs Super-7 (7-speed), or the new Sachs Elan (12-speed). We can also supply the Shimano Nexus 7-speed on request.

Sachs 3 X 7   The standard handlebar is the stainless-steel Euro-bar, with a separate stem. At extra cost, we can provide the nickel plated Royal Pedersen handlebar, which allows an even more upright position: there is no forward extension in the stem.

We allow no compromise when it comes to the wheels: each one is hand-assembled and trued. We use stainless-steel spokes in conjunction with strong Alesa hollow-section rims. Tyres come from Vredestein: Pedersens roll on easy-running Monte Carlo semi-slicks. Puncture protection bands and reflective sidewalls are standard.

For lighting, you can choose between a tread dynamo or the Schmidt's Original hub dynamo (at extra cost). The front lamp (Lumotec plus) and the rear light (4-D-Lite plus) both have an energy storage function, so that when you stop you're never left in the dark.

All of our hubs (except some hub gears) have maintenance free and long lasting sealed industrial bearings. As far as possible, our bicycles are assembled only with stainless-steel fasteners. They're assembled, by hand, with painstaking care.

You'll have noticed a lot of wooden components on the bikes in the photographs. They're made by the company Woodguard-Resseguier, and are available as fitted equipment - or, of course, as separate items: they'll also fit other bikes. Ask us for a Woodguard price list.

We can show you here only a few of the possibilites for fitting out your Pedersen. We may periodically make changes to the equipment specification, trying to keep up with the fast-moving technology of today's world. Ask your dealer for a current price list, or approach us directly.

The Pedersen is a therapeutic bike. Many people with back problems can cycle on nothing else. The upright position, particularly with the Royal handlebar, provides an anatomically beneficial posture - and the hammock seat naturally contributes to the overall comfort.

We recommend that you experience the difference: perhaps we've made you curious enough to ask your dealer for a test ride. Of course, it takes a few moments to get used to the compliant saddle, but after a little while you'll be wondering how you can ever be comfortable on your old bike again.

The Pedersen Triplet
The Pedersen Triplet   The Pedersen is pure bike culture. If you'd like to know more about the gentle genius of Mikael Pedersen, try the book 'The Ingenious Mr. Pedersen', which we supply in either English or German.

Pedersen framesets are normally supplied complete with forks, saddle, seatpost, rear tensioners and all necessary adapters and fasteners. To order (and at extra cost) we can deliver your frameset fitted with a KSS sealed bearing bottom bracket and a Primax needle bearing headset.

Alongside the standard brazed frames, we also offer Knock Down versions, screwed together at the bottom bracket. This construction is usually specified if the tubes are to undergo surface treatments, such as copper or nickel plating. Knock Down frames are only available in the Large size.

We try to maintain a stock of around 100 frames, so that we can deliver promptly, usually within two weeks. We can provide custom colours to order, although special colors do take a little longer - six to eight weeks.

    The Pedersen Tandem
As well as the normal Pedersen, we also make tandem and even triplet frames. These are always sold as framesets only, through specialist dealers. The 'Captain' position is always Large, while the 'Stoker' is always Medium. A tandem frameset costs about three times the price of a solo, the triplet about four times. While for a normal Pedersen the Magura HS-11 Classic hydraulic brakes are an option, for the tandem and triplet they're a must!   The Pedersen Tandem
